Many Students that attend Hampton University are not only from Virginia but from all over the world, from Bermuda to California to the Philippians. Some students from other countries may not still be living in their home country, but they still manage to hear about the Hampton University and its campus life.
Dardinia Joseph, or DJ, is a senior Journalism and Communications major from the island Dominica, which is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. "I heard about the school's journalism program, how it is second in the country" she said. "Also I wanted to go to an HBCU to participate in the black experience." She aspires to work in the field of print journalism.
Although DJ loves going to Hampton University she sometimes get home sick but going to Dominica is not a quick weekend trip especially with the economy at its state. One thing she misses is how everything is close by each other. While at home she never has a dull moment because their is always something to do. It can be real late at night and places will still be open, but in Hampton many places close by 9 or 10pm. The thing she misses the most is the culture. In Dominica music is always being played no matter the time of day or night where at Hampton music is only being played from 12pm to 2pm in the student center on Fridays or when there is a special event. The people there are also very friendly and treat each other like one big family. "Everybody looks out for each other" she said. Not saying that Hampton students do not act like a family but there can be times where the environment changes and it becomes every man or woman for themselves. Despite the dislikes, DJ was asked would she consider attending a college or university in Dominica she said "No."
Not all students at Hampton feel as strong about their culture like DJ does, however it is still apart of them. Culture is everywhere from every place no matter what school people decide to attend. Society is ever changing and acceptance of the many cultures the task is for these people to not forget their culture.

Move Review "DROOL"
So unrealistic
Drool did not do well
in the box off and after watching the film I can see why. It reminded me of a
cartoon in which when things are going wrong someone magically appears and
saves the day. This is one of those films that I would not watch in theatres
but on a television station like ABC Family or Netflicks. When it comes to the
mechanics of the film it is a four star out of ten but as for amusement it is a
six star out of ten.
The film begins with
a teenage girl, Tabby (Ashley Duggan Smith) a loner with a notebook full of
doodles, narrating the story and her family’s drama. Her mother, Anora (Laura
Harring) is the protagonist in the story dealing with her disrespectful teenage
daughter, a lonely son (Pete Christopher Newhouse), and abusive husband. Then
an unexpected neighbor, Imogene (Jill Marie Jones) moves next door and a series
of events arises to the family.
During the film
director and writer Nancy Kissam played on sexuality. In the beginning Tabby is
found having oral sex with one of her classmates because he showed her some
form of attention and she secretly was in love with him. While at the same time
Anora is breaking out of her meek shell and getting close to Imogene in a way
that is more than friends.
Then you have Pete
who is day dreaming about his male math teacher after his teacher praises him
for getting an A+ on his assignment. He also finds a doll that he takes with
him everywhere and caring a doll is not the norm thing to do for a boy. What
made it really weird is the fact that everybody, especially his mom, ignored
the fact that he was acting in this unusual way.
All in all the film
was not terrible but Kissam could have tightened up loose ends. She ended the
film with too many unanswered questions. It is ok to have a few but this film
at least five. What happened to the relationship with Imogene and Anora? Did
they go back home? Did Anora have a sit down with Pete to figure out his
sexuality? The list goes on.
If your every board
and need something to do, watch Drool it will entertain and confuse you all at
the same.

CAUSES OF A TEXT
TEXTING AND DRIVING
Why Do It?
Since the year 2000 the cell phone
has evolved each year, making the lives of its users easier and making itself a
practical necessity. People can surf the web, play games, send e-mails, take
pictures and most of all TEXT MESSAGEING, all on their phone. Last year CTIA
found that 158 billion text messages were sent in the United States.
When a person is driving a car and
they hear their phone making a sound, the first instinct is to pick up the
phone a find out who is calling; now it is to see a text message. According to
Infographic, “Statistics show that texting is more dangerous than talking on
the phone and drunk driving, and yet so many people text while driving and
assume it isn’t as dangerous.” So why do people do it?
Many drivers, especially teenage
drivers, tell themselves that their driving is good enough; I know my phone or it’s
just a simple text. "Sociologists
call it pluralistic ignorance. It's this concept where reality applies to
everybody but me," says Kevin Wehr, an assistant professor of sociology at
California State University.
A Hampton
University student, Terrell Madison was recently a victim of a texting driver.
Madison was leaving the library’s 24 hour study room when he was hit while
crossing the street. This driver not did not use good judgment and has now
caused Madison’s life to change forever as well as hers. He now cannot write,
walks with a cane, and because of physical therapy sessions he is unable to go
home for the holidays.
Laws
have been passed to ban the use of cell phones while in the car. Out of the 51
states 20 have banned cell phone usage for all drivers. In California if a
person is caught on the phone while driving there is a $20 fine for the first
defense and $50 for the rest.
Although
laws have passed banning cell phone usage it is not the only prevention that can
be made. Parents, role models, and peers can act in the reduction of texting
and driving by simply leading by example. A Liberty Mutual
Insurance survey showed that 69 percent of parents of teen drivers practice at
least two dangerous or distracting behaviors while driving.
Make the change and stop this
hazardous action and for more information on texting and driving talk with a
local insurance agent.
